Not Guilty Verdict in Assault Trial

The president of a business was accused of felony assault of a police officer and domestic violence. He not only faced losing his business but, if convicted, a mandatory prison sentence. It was a bet-your-company, bet-your-life case that required a humanistic approach. The incident began when a neighbor called the police to report that the man and his wife were having an argument. Police rushed into the house thinking it was an emergency. When the police attacked him, our client fought back. While picking a jury, we questioned potential jurors about their attitudes about testimony by police and about police conduct. At trial, we presented character witnesses and the human dimensions of the case. The jury acquitted. Our client and his wife remain married to this day.
